My husband is always telling me about my rest face. Yes, we all have one and its often not pretty. Heard of ‘resting bitch’ face, well mine’s more like ‘resting biggest grimace in the world’ face!
More and more people have told me about my grimace face which I seem to do whenever I am concentrating or doing ordinary things; it was bothering me. But I couldn’t seem to stop.
Then, I started to do something. Thanks to Yoga with Adriene; a wonderfully inspirational lady who teaches yoga on YouTube. She talks about ‘lifting the corners of your mouth’ when practising more difficult moves or in fact at any time during the course of the practise and every time she said it, I realised I was doing the grimace. Each time I changed from this very unflattering facial expression to a small smile, just by lifting the corners of my mouth, I noticed a change in my mentality. I enjoyed the yoga practise so much more.
So it got me thinking, how would I feel if I started reminding myself to lift those corners of my mouth when I was doing more mundane things like putting the washing away, reaching for a glass of water or just looking out of the car window at the view? I started practising this very easy, small act and I noticed a change immediately in the way I was feeling. I felt better, easier and instantly happier.
Try it. It costs nothing, it just takes practise (and reminding yourself to do it). Why not write yourself little post it notes around the house with this message? Stick one on the bathroom mirror or pop one in a drawer so you see it when you open it. Its’ so simple but so effective.
